UTIs, Strep Throat & Common Infections: When to See Your Provider Instead of Urgent Care
Medically reviewed by Russell Kelly, PA – Family Medicine – Core Care Clinic | Last updated: August 2026
When something like a UTI or strep throat hits, the instinct is often to head straight to urgent care. It feels faster, and it’s usually the first thing people think of when something needs attention now.
But if you already have a primary care provider who offers same-day visits, that’s frequently the better choice – not just for convenience, but for the quality of care itself. Faster follow-up, and a provider who already knows your history, often matters more than shaving a few minutes off a wait.
Common Infections Primary Care Handles Well
Most everyday infections don’t require a specialist or an emergency room – they’re exactly the kind of thing a same-day primary care visit is built for:
- Urinary tract infections and related bladder issues
- Strep throat, tonsillitis, and ear infections
- Sinus infections, colds, and bronchitis
- Pink eye and mononucleosis
- Minor skin infections like cellulitis or impetigo
- Gastrointestinal illness, including food poisoning and stomach flu
Why Same-Day Primary Care Often Beats Urgent Care
Urgent care is built for volume – you’re seen by whoever’s available, with no history of you beyond what’s in front of them that day. That’s genuinely useful for true emergencies away from home, but for a routine infection, it means starting from zero every time: explaining your history, your allergies, your current medications, to someone who’s never met you.
A same-day visit with your own primary care provider means someone who already knows your medical history, current medications, and any patterns worth watching – which matters more than it might seem. A provider who knows you’re prone to recurring UTIs, or that a particular antibiotic didn’t sit well with you last time, can make a better call faster than someone meeting you for the first time.
It also means better continuity afterward. If something doesn’t clear up as expected, you’re following up with the same provider who saw you initially, not starting over with someone new and re-explaining everything again.
When Urgent Care or the ER Is Still the Right Call
Same-day primary care isn’t the right fit for everything, and knowing the difference matters:
- Severe symptoms – high fever, difficulty breathing, severe or worsening pain
- Anything that feels like it genuinely can’t wait for a same-day appointment slot
- Injuries needing immediate hands-on evaluation, like a suspected fracture
- Symptoms that are rapidly getting worse rather than staying steady
What to Expect at a Same-Day Visit
- A focused visit centered on your current concern – not a full annual exam, just what’s needed to diagnose and treat what’s going on
- A review of your relevant history, since your provider likely already has it on file
- Same-day testing when needed – a rapid strep test or urine test, for example – with results often available before you leave
- A prescription sent directly to your pharmacy if needed, so you’re not waiting around
Common Questions
Can I get antibiotics the same day if needed?
